Fable by Adrienne Young (Book Review)

Summary

Fable by Adrienne Young is a thrilling adventure and pirate themed story that tells the story of what we will do to reach the people we love.

In this book, Fable, our main character has been stuck on an island for many years. She was left there as a child by her father who told her that once she is able to escape to come find him.

No surprise with the independence and strong willed character that Fable is, she manages to find a ship to board and makes her way across the sea. On this incredible journey she makes new friends, enemies and will do whatever it takes to reach the only parental figure in her life.

This was book was quite an adventure and one of my favorite YA novels to read in 2021.

The book itself was humorous at parts as well as sad when you begin to realize how much we put on the line for people who wouldn’t give us the time of day.

Rating

Characters – 10/10

Plot – 8/10

World Building – 7.5/10

Writing Style – 9/10

Overall – 9/10

Would I recommend this – Yes!

Characters – 10/10

Fable was a marvelous character to follow in this novel. Her story was inspiring and she was one of the few female characters where her descisions didn’t make me want to slam my head into a wall.

I understood how she felt and why she was so determined to sail across the sea. In addition, the supporting characters like her friends on the ship and West, especially, were incredible.

The cast reminded me of other friend groups like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Plot – 8/10

This was the first pirate/sea themed book I’ve read. I wasn’t sure what to think at first, but am now confident with the 8/10 for plot.

The plot was decent, there were a couple plot holes that may be answered in the second book. I look forward to reading more YA novels similar to this one.

World Building – 7.5/10

I felt like in this book the characters were emphasized more than the world itself. There wasn’t much to the world and I think Adrienne Young wanted us to focus more on the characters than the islands surrounding them.

I was hoping for more world building, but I understand why the focus was on Fable and the crew instead.

Writing Style – 9/10

This YA novel is very visual. You can see the clear blue of the water on the islands, and feel the warmth of Fables skin as she laid for hours on that deserted island.

In addition, you could feel the pain at the end when Adrienne finds her father after so many years. It was written so beautifully that I wanted to be with the crew sailing the ocean.

Overall – 9/10

Overall, I would rate this book 9/10. Because this is my first time reading a book with this theme I was pleasantly surprised with how I felt about each character. It was such a fast read and one I would highly recommend if you are in a bad reading slump!

Q - how many books do you read in a month ?

Listen, I don’t want to hype myself up but I used to be a super fast reader. I’m talking 6-7 books a month. That’s like several a week. But then I was thrown into the adult world with an adult job and let me tell you, you literally have time for nothing.

So, right now in my new adultish life I read about 2 books a month. Sometimes I aim for 3, if I’m feeling very ambitious
