Chapter 257 – Odahviing.
Chapter 257 – Odahviing.
[Chapter Size: 2500 Words.]
Third Person POV.
King's Landing.
...
...
Daemon summoned him.
Then the sky changed, a rift began to emerge like a hole in the sky surrounded by clouds.
Its roar came right after. The dragons reacted to it, reacted to something they did not know, but at the same time... familiar.
Odahviing arrived in this world beating his wings from the sky with his roar. Daemon had summoned him in the middle of the Dragonpit as soon as he felt it was possible, since, in the last few hours, he had been trying to concentrate his strength to further expand his connection with Oblivion while standing still in the middle of the place, because his previous connection, despite being very open, was still incapable of summoning something like Odahviing.
When the dragon came out of the portal in the middle of the sky, Odahviing was quite surprised, staring at it from the sky itself, while also observing the air of that world with little magic.
He approached, stopping nearby as he landed, breaking the bricks of the place while staring at Daemon in the center of it.
"Dovahkiin, you have finally summoned me," he said.
Val, Ygritte, and a few other people who were there stared in shock at the dragon smaller than Winter, but capable of speaking.
"It has been a while, Odahviing. How are things in Skyrim?"
"A lot has changed... But Skyrim has never forgotten you..." the dragon replied. After a while, he continued: "And will you return? People keep climbing the mountain in search of Paarthurnax and the Greybeards. They still want answers about your whereabouts, and, in turn, Paarthurnax asks if he still feels the connection established with you. I answer that yes, but too weak for me to be summoned, until tonight," Odahviing said.
Daemon remained silent upon hearing that. The memories of his twelve years living between life and death constantly in Skyrim could not be forgotten so easily. It had already been almost three years since he had returned to that world, which also led him to reflect on that time.
Since he arrived, he started from nothing, losing everything he had in Skyrim, leaving everything behind and coming to that world without allies, wealth, or weapons... Only his powers, with a name and a revenge. Today, he had King's Landing in his hands, most of the kingdoms had already knelt, while, without exception, all trembled before his power. Even so, he should not treat this as a great achievement. After all, he was the Dragonborn. Doing what he had done so far should not be so surprising.
As for people, Daemon did not stop thinking about his friends, former allies, acquaintances, and even his lovers. But that had never been meant to last.
He had known that from the beginning and, at the first opportunity, left everything behind. They might feel longing, but also, certainly, they must harbor anger and resentment when he simply left. Even so, there was nothing to be done and he did not regret it.
He abandoned a title of hero and savior, lands, wealth, favors, and connections. He chose to take revenge, even if he was being used by the gods. Even so, he would choose the same path: to resolve the problems that caused his birth, clear his family's name, rescue those who could still be saved, such as his aunt, restore his house, raise his family again, and take what was his by right.
And yet, he had also achieved his own things — and did not regret it. And here he would also have more power, because there was no way for him to have the power to command all of Tamriel, which was 40% larger than Westeros, without rightful claim, and the lands were far wilder and more unstable, after all the emperor himself was forced to follow demands, not to mention the Thalmor's control over the emperor himself...
Now, he was Daemon Targaryen, the rider of the only ice dragon recorded in the history of Westeros… and now also the rider of a fire dragon. The rightful king of the seven kingdoms, or nine.
He conquered battle after battle, made his name, created chaos where he believed necessary, increased his enemies, and harmed all those he judged deserving. He was as cruel as he believed he should be. He received titles such as Kingslayer, King Beyond the Wall, King in the North, and now, Dragon King, as some had begun to call him.
Daemon raised his head to Odahviing. He needed to give an answer. "When you return, tell everyone that my life is in this world. I can no longer return to Skyrim," he said with more firmness than he had ever imagined when saying this...
He had his blood there. Not only the Starks he liked, but also his aunt and his first child.
He no longer had any intention of resuming his life in Skyrim. Perhaps, if he could return one day, it would only be for a visit, if he had the chance. But his life now was in that world.
Besides, just like before, he also needed to save that world from a catastrophe.
"You are serious... I understand," Odahviing replied. "In any case, you called me for more than just exchanging words, right?"
Daemon nodded. "I want you to do me a favor. We are still partners, aren't we?" he asked.
The dragon stared at him for a moment in silence before nodding. "Yes. The world is different, the bond is weaker, the magic is weak here, but we are still partners," he replied.
They had never been master and servant. Odahviing had always been an ally. After being captured in Dragonsreach, Daemon had negotiated with him to end Alduin.
"I need you to go to the North. Follow straight across the continent until you find a massive wall of ice. I want you to protect it and remain there, preventing any threat from either side. Can you do that for me?"
"A wall of ice, hm... interesting," Odahviing said, thoughtful. "I should just head North, then?"
"Yes. The Wall is in the far North. You might not reach it in 2 days of flight... There are already humans protecting it, do not hurt anyone unless necessary. If anyone is respectful, do not attack them. Just say you are there in my name, say it is a request from Daemon Targaryen — the name I use in this world now."
"Daemon...", he repeated. "Alright, Dovahkiin. I will do it. Besides... what is this dragon?"
He then turned his attention to Winter, who remained still, watching him cautiously. "I also smell other dragons nearby," he added, before looking around, trying to locate the source.
"They are not a threat. They are not dragons of the same Dovah kind. I would tell you about the history of my family — of my true family, which has always been made up of dragon riders — but can we leave that for when I arrive at the Wall?" Daemon asked.
Odahviing observed him and nodded, although he still cast a glance at Winter.
"But I must say, this dragon is weak," he commented, seeing the magic within the creature, nothing impressive.
Winter growled immediately, clearly irritated. Perhaps she did not understand the words, but she recognized the tone and the feeling of contempt in the dragon's communication with her master.
"Do not call her weak," Daemon said. "She is your ally, just as she is my partner."
"Very well, then. I will be going," Odahviing replied.
After a moment, Daemon felt his presence moving away, as he watched him beat his wings and rise into the skies. There was no need to indicate the direction. Odahviing could easily recognize the planet's magnetic field and pointed himself north — even birds knew how to find north, imagine a dovah dragon.
And so he went, advancing in the correct direction.
Daemon sighed and, a few seconds later, approached Winter, touching her neck. "You are not weak, alright? He is just too arrogant and has no idea what you are capable of," he murmured in the ancient tongue, feeling her bad mood.
Satisfied, he turned and approached his group.
"Let's go to the castle. I'm a bit tired," he admitted.
And he was not lying. He had used a lot of Thu'um that night. It did not hurt his throat or anything like that, but certainly, using so many shouts drained the energy of his soul. Not permanently — it recovered naturally after some time of rest —, but the sensation still remained there until Daemon recovered. Daemon estimated that he had consumed around 20% of his spiritual energy that night, and pulling Odahviing was the most exhausting.
"Okay, that was very strange. What the hell was that talking dragon?", Ygritte could not help but grumble as Daemon approached them.
Daemon gave a slight smile. "We will talk later. Let's go to the castle."
Soon, everyone followed.
The city was still completely stirred. The events of that night — the battle against the black dragon, Winter's return, and the summoning of Odahviing — were already spreading like wildfire among the people. Rumors ran everywhere: they said that Daemon had spoken to a talking dragon and had sent it to protect the Wall.
Daemon ignored all of this and headed to the castle.
In the Red Keep, he ordered plenty of food to his room, devouring everything along with Ygritte and Val, who joined him with cups of wine. Sandro did his role as royal guard outside the room, protecting the corridor.
He could finally relax on the queen's bed — the same one that had been in Winterfell more than two years ago.
The old king and queen's beds had been burned, and he took the opportunity to install new ones. He would still have to make new requests to replace the furniture, since the current ones did not please him much. And he would have to hear Dany's opinion about it.
The next day, it was possible to hear the sound of the army camps in the distance. Daemon went to eat, calling Lord Stark and Robb to join him in the King's Chamber, where they had their meals.
"Your Grace, do you intend to eliminate House Tyrell and House Martell?" his uncle asked, raising his voice. Daemon was satisfied with his decision, but that seemed to bother his uncle. Even so, Daemon would hear his opinion — although he had already made his decision.
Daemon stopped and looked at him. "Do you still intend to argue about this? I have already made my decision. I need to send a message to all of Westeros. It is necessary to show what the destruction of House Targaryen has brought. Even though I arrived a bit late — about two decades after the rebellion — the consequences come, sooner or later."
His uncle seemed dissatisfied, but what would he do, he was bound to Daemon, he could not retreat, he was a condemned man to the Wall and would go there after the war, he was only serving to have a chance for his son to be redeemed before the North for his first failure.
And Daemon continued: "The Iron Islands have lost their lord. The West has lost its ruling family, but that is not enough. Even those who tried to bring the Blackfyres back to take power will suffer. I will remove them from power. Just as Aegon gave power to the Tyrells to take the Reach, I am taking it away."
"They will not accept this easily. The other lords will not accept it," Stark replied.
"They will," Daemon said firmly. "Aegon the Conqueror brought the Seven Kingdoms to their knees with the power of dragons — with the exception of Dorne. And I have more than that. The families are trying to return to power stronger than before, and I will not leave loose ends this time. They have become too ambitious..."
Stark seemed to want to say something more, but fell silent.
Daemon then looked at Bran's raven, which remained perched on top of an empty chair. Some presence was still within it, but it always followed him.
"Bran sent me a message last night," he said, drawing the attention of the Starks.
Robb and Stark looked at him, while Ygritte and Val ate in silence. Lafy was also present at the table, as the king's squire, he shared the meals.
"The remaining Greyjoy fleet, along with Euron Greyjoy riding that dragon lost by the Blackfyre, is advancing toward the Wall. Euron seems to have interest there."
Robb frowned, while Stark showed concern.
"Do you think he will free the men you took from the Iron Islands?" Robb asked.
Daemon shook his head. "They are too few. Around two thousand. That would not make a difference. I do not think that is it." He paused.
"Whatever it is, it is dangerous. But do not be too worried... That is why I summoned that dragon."
"What... that dragon, by the way, Your Majesty?" Lord Stark swallowed hard and asked. "If you allow me, I did not imagine you had another dragon — especially one that speaks."
"If you want to know, that dragon came from another world. He was my partner against Alduin, the World-Eater — the dragon that threatened all of Tamriel," Daemon replied.
He had already explained before about that continent and about who Alduin was.
"What a crazy world… dragons that speak, dragons that want to destroy the world…" Robb could not help but mutter.
"You would be quite surprised by what you could find in Skyrim. Monsters roam forests and roads, different races walk side by side, coexisting — although there is much prejudice and distrust between them. Gods and all kinds of creatures are worshiped. Magic is something common. Whether for good or for darker things you could see..."
"Are people there as strong as you?" Lafy asked, curious. He had never asked that before.
Daemon had already told about his mentor in Skyrim, when he was Lafy's age, about how he was adopted while still young from the orphanage and became a kind of squire to a noble Nordic warrior who saw something in him as soon as he saw him... He was not wrong. Daemon learned everything from him, traveling through Skyrim while they handled the family's affairs.
At one moment, Daemon saw his mentor die… and after that, his journey lasted for a few years, until heading to Helgen, in the event where Alduin appeared for the first time and his fate was tied to that of the dragons.
"Anyway, I trust Odahviing. That dragon can destroy Greyjoy easily. It is a shame that the other dragon will be killed, but there is no choice, is there?"
He paused before continuing: "Now we need to prepare the troops. I will launch my first attack against the army."
"You are going to use the dragons?" Robb asked.
"Not all of them. Even so, I need to see how that black dragon is doing, see if he is still rebellious. I will use only Winter. She is more than enough to make our enemies' lives a living hell," Daemon replied, standing up and preparing for the day.
