Chapter 370 - 13: Idle Play
Chapter 370 - 13: Idle Play
"Cooperation? Of course. If we’re going to solve the disaster plaguing the Land of Rhythm, we’ll all need each other."
After hearing Eilvette’s suggestion, Westheid gave it a moment of serious thought before agreeing decisively.
"In that case, I’ll be counting on you, Duke Qinghui."
The Grand Law Officer’s expression finally softened slightly. He tilted his head and called out,
"Amithren!"
The moment Eilvette shouted, a tall, aloof Elf with an exquisitely beautiful face and silver hair stood up. Though her attire lacked the protection of Metal Armor, her tightly cinched waist, perfectly smooth and wrinkle-free tunic, pristine white gloves, and a shawl embroidered with a golden Phoenix gave her an air of refined elegance and sharp competence.
Her full chest, cinched waist, and long legs combined to create a truly magnificent sight.
A pair of Dual Swords hung at her waist. They had no sheaths; their Blade Bodies were covered in dense Runes. The unique weapons immediately caught Westheid’s eye.
As far as he recalled, only one profession used these kinds of special Dual Swords.
’Royal Court Stringed Swordsmen, huh...’
Westheid knew of them, of course. Any given Path would naturally have more than one profession, branching out over time. The Stringed Swordsmen were a profession on the Path of Resonance, second only to the Tuners.
While they couldn’t use the Thousand Laws Ceremony to channel the Power of Ensemble like the Tuners, they were the mainstay of the Royal Court in direct combat. They were the Extraordinary Profession truly suited for day-to-day fighting and guard duty.
With the Tuners helpless against the Demons, only the Stringed Swordsmen, who did not rely on the Thousand Laws Ceremony, could actually harm them. It was no exaggeration to call them the main fighting force of the Royal Court’s anti-Demon front.
’After all, the Tuners are relegated to home defense. Once they’re on Demon turf and can’t draw on the Power of Ensemble, they’re basically useless.’
"Amithren is the captain of the First Battalion of the Royal Court’s Stringed Swordsmen. During this time, she will assist you. A Duke Qinghui visiting the Royal Court needs a guard and a guide, does he not?"
’Assist? Or keep an eye on me? I’m betting on the latter.’
Eilvette was truly terrible at hiding his intentions. The move to plant someone on him was so clumsy that Westheid almost had to laugh.
"Very well. I have no objections."
Westheid looked toward Amithren. The beautiful, silver-haired Elf glanced at him, her expression exceptionally cold, and simply nodded in reply.
"As you command, Grand Law Officer."
Her tone was remarkably cold, completely different from the many Elves Westheid had met since his arrival. Perhaps sensing his confusion, Ailorus, who was kneeling on the floor, leaned in closer and whispered,
"Amithren is a member of the Pure Blood Faction, you see. That’s why she’s not very friendly."
’Oh, so she’s one of those old-guard Royal Court types.’
Westheid immediately understood.
Among the many races of the Mortal World, it was only natural that not everyone lived in harmony. Most races were quite exclusionary, with discrimination and backbiting being commonplace. Among them all, the Elves’ sense of superiority was particularly pronounced.
The first signs of this had appeared back in ancient times. The Elves had carved out their own territory and, relying on their natural Talents, had already begun to see themselves as superior.
Under Emperor Qianlu’s influence, open warfare within the Royal Court had ceased. But if you wanted to win, you could still find a way.
The Pure Blood Faction within the Elf Royal Family held other races in contempt and deeply resented the existence of Half-Elves. This was despite intermingling having become quite common within the Royal Court. Many Elves associated with mortals, and the Half-Elf population had grown so large that they could be considered half the strength of the Royal Court.
Unfortunately, the Pure Blood Faction did not approve.
’In that case, is Eilvette himself a leader of the Pure Blood Faction? No wonder he always looks so sour.’
After hurriedly giving his instructions, Eilvette promptly departed as if that had been his sole reason for attending the banquet.
Thanks to the Grand Law Officer, the atmosphere was utterly ruined. As dusk fell, the welcome banquet unceremoniously fizzled out.
"Well then... Duke Qinghui, until next time!"
Ailorus gave Westheid a polite, elegant curtsy, then winked at him again, a playful expression brightening her delicate features.
"As much as I look forward to meeting with you privately, for today, please rest well."
The golden-haired Elf girl then clasped her hands behind her back and skipped away, surrounded by her attendants.
Westheid watched Ailorus’s retreating figure, his eyes half-lidded.
’This girl...’
Her Majesty the Queen was clearly being friendly toward him—abnormally so. Yet for all her pure and innocent demeanor, he had no idea what this Elf Maiden was truly thinking.
’I don’t know if my original plan will even work. If the effect of my Charm isn’t strong enough, I’ll be completely lost.’
’Everything I’ve planned is built on the assumption that my Charm is powerful enough to sway any member of the Elf Royal Family.’
’Without that, the Thousand Laws Royal Court will be even tougher to deal with than the Country of Yonglan was.’
"Duke Qinghui, your quarters have been arranged. Please follow the attendants."
Amithren approached Westheid and spoke, her voice like ice.
"So cold. Can’t you at least try to look a little more pleasant?"
Westheid smiled and met the gaze of the silver-haired Royal Court Stringed Swordsman, but she didn’t dare to hold it.
