Chapter 259 - 257: Being Followed
Chapter 259 - 257: Being Followed
Mia Grant was surprised. "He hasn’t been to school at all since he got back from Portia?"
"Probably not." Although Ian really didn’t want to talk about anyone else when they were alone, especially not his brother.
But he was afraid she would worry and overthink things, so he tried to tell her everything he knew.
"He’s not in Jynsia right now."
Mia Grant found that strange.
Tomorrow was New Year’s Day, a one-day holiday. After that came exams, and then winter break.
Given Felix Sinclair’s personality, how could he possibly take time off now?
She remembered back in high school when he had a high fever for two straight days but still insisted on coming to class.
Even though his reflexes were sluggish, he still insisted on tutoring her after class.
Ian Sinclair said, "Who knows what he’s up to. He’s abroad right now, and it’s unclear when he’ll be back."
"..."
"Hasn’t your family been in contact with him recently?"
"Mom asked. He just said he was going to see some... scientist? Or someone like that. I guess he went to meet his ’idol.’"
Ah. Mia Grant nodded in understanding, an inexplicable sense of relief washing over her.
「Downstairs from the Jynsia U women’s dormitory.」
A discreet commercial van was parked by the flowerbed not far from the entrance.
At the dormitory entrance, Mia Grant turned and took her books back from Ian Sinclair.
"You should head back. Tomorrow’s a holiday, and I’m not going out. I plan to get a good long sleep. So you can relax and get some rest too."
Ian Sinclair was skeptical of her words.
"Really?" The puppy didn’t believe her.
"Really," Mia Grant sighed. "It’s so cold, and there’s still snow on the ground. I don’t want to go out."
"I thought you liked snow."
"Who said that?"
"They say all girls do."
Mia Grant smiled. "It’s fine. I don’t hate it, either. I’m heading in."
Only after the slender figure disappeared into the lobby did Carla Sinclair look away.
Not far away, Ian Sinclair also left. His mom had called, telling him he had to be home before dinner.
After a long moment, Carla Sinclair turned her neck to look at the person beside her.
"She’s very close with Ian and Felix. They were classmates in high school."
"I’ve seen her now. It’s getting late. Let’s head back. The Sinclair Family is still waiting."
"Mm."
—
With finals over, Mia Grant faced her first problem.
Where to stay for the break.
Jynsia U’s winter break was thirty-five days long.
She didn’t have her own place in Jynsia.
Fortunately, she had plenty of savings, more than enough to stay in a hotel.
With the hotel booked, Mia Grant planned to drop off her luggage first and then go to the hospital to find Kian Keller.
Just as she was leaving the dormitory with her suitcase, she ran right into two bodyguards in black suits.
Past experiences made her instinctively step back.
The next second, one of them took off his sunglasses, revealing a pair of familiar eyes. He grinned and greeted her, "Miss, long time no see."
Mia Grant’s eyes widened. It was Zero.
"What are you doing here?"
Zero had the other man take her luggage, saying as they walked, "Sir sent us to wait for you."
Mia Grant was still confused.
Seeing her expression, Zero told her in a low voice, "Next time you book a hotel, try not to book one owned by the Keller Group."
"..."
Mia Grant was speechless.
She had actually made a point of avoiding them when she booked her hotel, choosing only a three-star one.
’So much for trying to avoid them.’
Once in the car, Mia Grant realized they weren’t heading toward the hospital.
She learned from Zero that Kian Keller had been discharged from the hospital yesterday.
"So soon? Did he ignore the doctor’s orders again?"
Zero gave an awkward laugh. "Well... it’s fine, actually. The family has its own medical team. The doctor said it was okay for him to be at home, as long as he doesn’t push himself like before."
During the drive, Mia Grant fell silent, leaning back in her seat and texting Ian Sinclair.
Because of this, she didn’t notice anything unusual in the front of the car.
Zero, sitting in the passenger seat, glanced at the rearview mirror, then shot a look at Mia Grant in the back. Seeing that she hadn’t noticed, he looked away and made a discreet gesture to the driver—a silent command to lose their tail.
At the same time, he sent a message to a group chat on his phone.
So at the next intersection, just a second before the light turned red, their car smoothly drove through, putting distance between them and the car behind.
The traffic lights in Jynsia had long cycles. By the time the car behind them got through, four or five identical vehicles had appeared out of nowhere, boxing it in and forcing it to slow down.
The car drove so steadily that Mia Grant didn’t notice anything amiss the entire time.
The Keller residence—a familiar place once again.
Returning to Kian Keller’s home again... ’To be honest, it really did feel strangely like coming home.’
Mia Grant yawned and followed a maid upstairs.
Zero took the stairs up to report to Kian Keller.
Inside the study, Kian Keller sat behind his desk, reviewing documents Aaron had brought him.
The butler was making tea for him off to the side.
Zero entered. "Sir, just now..."
"I know." Kian Keller was looking at information on the car.
Zero fell silent.
A few minutes later, the man looked up at him and asked, "Is she back in her room?"
"Yes."
"She didn’t notice?"
Zero nodded again. "The car was very steady. Miss Grant didn’t notice anything."
"Based on my assessment, they must have been lying in wait near the school since this morning. They started following us not long after we picked up Miss Grant and left campus."
"Judging by the car model, they aren’t ordinary people."
Kian Keller put down the papers in his hand. "In your opinion, what was their intention?"
Zero was a former scout and exceptionally sharp.
He analyzed the situation carefully. "My initial assessment is that they didn’t intend to kidnap her."
"Also, they maintained a safe following distance the entire time, well within a controllable range. There was no sign of them planning to suddenly accelerate."
"Could it be... someone from the Donovan Family, or Mr. Grant?"
"Judging by the vehicle, it seems like they could have been there to pick up Miss Grant."
"But Miss Grant was definitely unaware of it."
Soon, Aaron’s phone rang.
Everyone except Kian Keller looked at him.
A few seconds later, he put his phone away. "Sir, the vehicle is registered under Sunrise, which is a subsidiary of the Sinclair Family."
"This car has been active in Jynsia for the past week, primarily operating between three points: the Eastside Hotel, the Sunrise offices, and Jynsia U."
"The car has been seen on the new Jynsia U campus almost every day."
"Is Carla Sinclair in Jynsia?"
"She was here a few days ago, but she’s in Portia now."
Zero analyzed, "It’s a car sent by Sunrise to chauffeur Mr. Sinclair, but Mr. Sinclair isn’t in it. If they just wanted to ’monitor’ Miss Grant, they could have used a more discreet vehicle. Since they didn’t switch cars, could it be that the person with the authority to be in that car is... *that* person?"
「In the bedroom.」
Mia Grant, knowing her way around, went into the walk-in closet to change her clothes.
When she came out, she picked up her phone from the stool and noticed a missed call from ten minutes ago.
It was from an unknown number.
The caller ID showed it was from Jynsia.
Mia Grant hesitated for a moment before calling back.
The call connected quickly, but the other end was silent.
"Hello, who is this, please?"
Upon hearing her voice, the person on the other end seemed to snap out of a daze. "Hello."
Just a single greeting, with nothing more to follow.
Mia Grant asked again, but this time there was no reply.
An eerie silence stretched on until the call disconnected. No one had spoken another word.
